San Diego
Sleep in Little Italy.
It is 10 minutes from the airport, a short walk from the bayfront and the USS Midway, and on two trolley lines, with less late-night noise than the Gaslamp. If the beach is the point of the trip, book Coronado or Pacific Beach instead.

Where to stay in San Diego
Downtown sits on the bay, about 3 miles from the airport, with the Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, the Convention Center and the USS Midway all within walking distance of each other. Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo are just northeast, and the trolley links downtown to Old Town and UC San Diego.
Restaurants line India Street and Kettner Boulevard, and the Piazza della Famiglia on Date Street hosts the Little Italy Mercato farmers market every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The County Center/Little Italy station is on both the Blue and Green trolley lines, and the bayfront and the USS Midway are a 15 to 20 minute walk.
The catch: There is no beach nearby, and Date Street closes to traffic for the Saturday market, which makes weekend mornings crowded.
Rooms in Little Italy tonightThe 38-acre district runs from Broadway to Harbor Drive between 4th and 6th avenues, with Fifth Avenue as its main street and more than 90 historic buildings, most of them restaurants and bars now. Petco Park is a block east, the Convention Center is across Harbor Drive, and the Green Line stops at the Gaslamp Quarter station.
The catch: Fifth Avenue bars stay loud late on weekends, conventions and Padres home games push rates up, and hotel valet parking runs about $60 to $65 a night.
Rooms in Gaslamp Quarter tonightCoronado is its own city, incorporated in 1890, across the bay and reached by the Coronado Bridge or the ferry. Orange Avenue runs from the bay side down to the 1888 Hotel del Coronado and the wide sand of Coronado Beach, and mid-range rooms include El Cordova, Glorietta Bay Inn and the Coronado Island Marriott.
The catch: The ferry ($9 each way) docks on the bay side, about 1.5 miles from the beach hotels, so most nights out in San Diego mean a drive or rideshare over the bridge.
Rooms in Coronado tonightThe Village centers on Prospect Street and Girard Avenue above La Jolla Cove, where sea lions crowd the rocks and harbor seals use the Children's Pool beach. La Jolla Shores, Birch Aquarium and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego are close by, and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a few miles north.
The catch: Street parking in the Village is hard to find, rates run above downtown, and the trolley stops at UC San Diego rather than the Village, so plan on driving.
Rooms in La Jolla tonightGarnet Avenue and Mission Boulevard hold the bars, restaurants and surf shops, and Crystal Pier (1927), which has a hotel built on it, sits at the west end of Garnet. The boardwalk runs about 3.2 miles south into Mission Beach, past Belmont Park's wooden Giant Dipper coaster, and Mission Bay is just south for paddleboarding.
The catch: Garnet Avenue gets loud on weekend nights, drinking on the beach is banned, and the nearest trolley stop, Balboa Avenue, is a bus ride from the sand.
Rooms in Pacific Beach tonight
Prices are typical mid-range hotel rates per night before tax, rounded to $10. Times are to the Gaslamp Quarter. Booking links open tonight's real prices.
When to go
Come in September or October. Highs run 75 to 77°F, the ocean is still near 70°F, the early summer marine layer has burned off, and rates drop after the Del Mar meet ends on Labor Day. Skip downtown during Comic-Con in late July unless you are going, since rooms sell out months ahead.
Spring Mar–May
Highs 67-70°F, lows 54-60°F
Mild, with highs near 70°F by May. From May, the marine layer (locals call it May Gray) often keeps the coast cloudy until midday, and rates start climbing toward summer.
Summer Jun–Aug
Highs 72-77°F, lows 63-68°F
June mornings are often gray at the beach. July is the peak month: the County Fair, Pride, the Del Mar racing opener and Comic-Con all land within a few weeks, and the ocean warms to about 70°F.
Fall Sep–Nov
Highs 71-77°F, lows 55-66°F
September is one of the warmest months, with the ocean near 70°F and clearer skies than early summer. Rates ease after Labor Day, once the Del Mar meet ends.
Winter Dec–Feb
Highs about 66°F, lows 50-52°F
Cool nights and the ocean near 60°F, so it is more a walking and museum season than a swimming one. Outside the holidays and the late January PGA Tour stop at Torrey Pines, rooms are cheapest now.

Getting around
From the airport
San Diego International (SAN) is about 3 miles from downtown. MTS Route 992 leaves the elevated platforms at both terminals every 15 minutes from 4:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. and reaches Santa Fe Depot in about 15 minutes for the regular $3 fare; the free San Diego Flyer shuttle runs every 20 to 30 minutes to the Old Town Transit Center for the trolley. Taxis and Uber or Lyft pick up across the crosswalk from baggage claim at both terminals.
Trains and buses
MTS runs the trolley (Blue, Green, Orange and Copper lines) and buses. Since October 1, 2026, a ride costs $3, and paying with the PRONTO app or card caps your spending at $7 a day; contactless bank cards and cash also work. On the trolley, tap at the platform validator before you board.
Driving
You can skip the car if you stay in Little Italy or the Gaslamp and stick to downtown, Balboa Park and Old Town, but La Jolla, Torrey Pines, Point Loma and the beaches are much easier by car. Downtown hotels charge about $60 to $65 a night for valet parking.
Worth your time
Balboa Park
Balboa Park
A 1,200-acre park built up for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, with museums along El Prado, the San Diego Zoo on its north side, and free organ concerts at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion every Sunday at 2 p.m.
USS Midway Museum
Downtown waterfront
Walk the flight deck and the cramped below-deck quarters of an aircraft carrier commissioned in 1945; open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with last entry at 4.
La Jolla Cove and Children's Pool
La Jolla
Sea lions haul out on the rocks at the Cove and harbor seals use the Children's Pool beach a short walk south, both visible from the coastal path.
Cabrillo National Monument
Point Loma
Views back over the bay to downtown, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and tide pools that close at 4:30 p.m.; the park is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and entry is $20 per car, good for 7 days.
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
North of La Jolla
Sandstone bluff trails above the ocean through rare Torrey pines, with demand-priced parking of about $15 to $25 at the South Beach lot.
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
Old Town
Five original adobes, restored buildings and small museums from the Mexican and early American town, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free parking for up to 4 hours.
Chicano Park
Barrio Logan
Dozens of murals painted on the pillars under the Coronado Bridge since residents took over the land in 1970, a National Historic Landmark since 2016 and a short walk from the Barrio Logan trolley stop.
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
Point Loma
Sandstone bluffs, arches and sea caves along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, where locals gather at Ladera Street for sunset; there are no restrooms and parking is on the street.
What to eat
California burrito
Carne asada, French fries and cheese in a flour tortilla, the standard order at the city's many "-berto's" taco shops.
Carne asada fries
Fries piled with chopped carne asada, guacamole, sour cream and cheese, which Lolita's Mexican Food says it started in the late 1990s; Petco Park sells them too.
Fish tacos
Baja-style grilled or battered fish on tortillas with cabbage; Oscars Mexican Seafood on Emerald Street in Pacific Beach and University Avenue in Hillcrest is a local favorite.
Hodad's
Burgers in Ocean Beach since 1969, at 5010 Newport Avenue since 1991, with a second location downtown.
Point Loma Seafoods
A fish market at 2805 Emerson Street, near the Shelter Island marinas, open since 1963, with a counter selling fish sandwiches, sushi and smoked fish.
Before you go
Tip 18 to 20 percent at sit-down restaurants and $1 or $2 a drink at bars. Drinking alcohol on city beaches has been illegal since 2008, including Pacific Beach and Mission Beach. Bring a layer even in summer, since coastal mornings in May and June are often gray and cool and nights drop into the 60s. Visitors underestimate distances: La Jolla and Pacific Beach look close on a map, but rush hour on Interstate 5 can stretch a 20 minute drive well past that. Coronado is a separate city with its own parking rules and meters.
How San Diego got this way
The Kumeyaay lived here for thousands of years before Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed into the bay in 1542, and Sebastián Vizcaíno named it in 1602. Spain founded a presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcalá in 1769, California's first Spanish settlement, and the town grew near what is now Old Town. San Diego became American in 1848 and incorporated in 1850. Alonzo Horton's purchase in 1867 moved the center to today's downtown, with Fifth Avenue as its main street. The Navy arrived in 1901, the 1915 exposition shaped Balboa Park, and World War II aircraft plants helped push the population from 203,341 in 1940 to 1,386,932 in 2020.
Questions people ask
Where should I stay in San Diego for a first visit?
Little Italy is the easiest base, close to the airport, the bayfront and two trolley lines. Stay in Coronado or Pacific Beach if beach time matters more than downtown.
How do I get from San Diego airport to downtown?
MTS Route 992 runs every 15 minutes from both terminals to Santa Fe Depot in about 15 minutes for $3. The free San Diego Flyer goes to the Old Town Transit Center, where you can catch the trolley.
Do I need a car in San Diego?
Not if you stay downtown and stick to Balboa Park, the waterfront and Old Town. For La Jolla, Torrey Pines, Point Loma and most beaches, a car saves a lot of time, but downtown hotel valet runs $60 to $65 a night.
Is Coronado part of San Diego?
No. Coronado is a separate city across the bay, reached by the Coronado Bridge or a 15 minute ferry from Broadway Pier or the Convention Center that costs $9 each way.
Is San Diego warm enough for the beach in winter?
Daytime highs average about 66°F from December to February, which is fine for walking the beach. The ocean is around 59 to 62°F, so most people only swim in a wetsuit.
