Las Vegas

Sleep in Center Strip.

Book the Center Strip, between Planet Hollywood and the LINQ. You can walk to Bellagio, Caesars Palace and the High Roller, the Monorail stops at Horseshoe/Paris and Flamingo/Caesars, and you should budget $50 to $55 a night for the resort fee on top of the room rate.

Where to stay in Las Vegas

Most visitors stay on the Strip, the 4.2 miles of Las Vegas Boulevard from Mandalay Bay north to Sahara Avenue. It sits outside the city limits in unincorporated Clark County, and the resorts are so large that walks take longer than the map suggests. Downtown, a few miles north, is the original city: Fremont Street, smaller casinos, and the Mob and Neon museums.

  1. The blocks around Flamingo Road hold Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Paris, Horseshoe, the Flamingo, Harrah's and the LINQ, with the High Roller and the LINQ Promenade on the east side. The Monorail stops at Horseshoe/Paris and Flamingo/Caesars, and footbridges cross Las Vegas Boulevard at Flamingo Road. The cheaper rooms are usually at the Flamingo, Harrah's, the LINQ and Horseshoe; Caesars and Bellagio cost more.

The catch: Resort fees here run about $50 to $55 a night before tax, and the sidewalks are packed on weekend nights.

  2. MGM Grand, New York-New York, Park MGM, Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay sit around and south of the Tropicana Avenue intersection, the closest Strip hotels to the airport. T-Mobile Arena is between New York-New York and Park MGM, and Allegiant Stadium is just across I-15. A free tram links Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur, and the Monorail starts at MGM Grand.

The catch: Event nights at T-Mobile Arena and Allegiant Stadium bring crowds and event parking rates, and the old Tropicana site is a construction zone until the Athletics' ballpark opens in 2028.

    Rooms in South Strip tonight
  3. North of Spring Mountain Road are the Venetian and Palazzo, Treasure Island, Wynn and Encore, Resorts World, Fontainebleau, SAHARA and the Strat. Sphere is behind the Venetian on Sands Avenue, the Las Vegas Convention Center is a few blocks east, and the Peppermill sits between Wynn and Resorts World. Treasure Island and SAHARA include self-parking, which most Strip resorts charge for.

The catch: The resorts are spread out, so walking between them is slow, and rates jump when a big show is at the convention center.

    Rooms in North Strip tonight
  4. Circa, the Golden Nugget, the D, the Plaza, Four Queens, Binion's and the Golden Gate face Fremont Street under the Fremont Street Experience canopy, with El Cortez a few blocks east. The Mob Museum is two blocks north on Stewart Avenue, the Neon Museum is a short ride up Las Vegas Boulevard, and the Arts District is about a mile south. Resort fees run about $30 to $46, Binion's and Four Queens charge none, and several hotels include parking.

The catch: Every Strip show or dinner means a 15 to 20 minute ride, and the canopy shows and street stages stay loud until midnight.

Rooms in Downtown (Fremont Street) tonight
  5. The blocks east of the Strip around the Las Vegas Convention Center have non-casino chain hotels, including a Courtyard, Hampton Inn & Suites, Home2 Suites and Embassy Suites, which don't add resort fees. The Westgate is next door, and the Monorail's Boingo Station at LVCC and Westgate station connect to the Strip resorts.

The catch: Rates climb steeply during CES, SEMA and other big shows, and there's little within walking distance at night.

Prices are typical mid-range hotel rates per night before tax, rounded to $10. Times are to the Bellagio fountains. Booking links open tonight's real prices.

When to go

Come March to May or October to mid-November, when highs run between 70 and 90°F. Book Sunday to Thursday nights if you can: in 2026 weekend hotel occupancy averaged about 89 percent against 77 percent midweek, and rates follow. Check the convention calendar before you pick dates, and avoid CES, SEMA and the F1 weekend unless you're going.

Spring Mar–May

Highs 71°F in March to 89°F in May

Dry and mild, good for walking the Strip and driving Red Rock Canyon, where timed-entry reservations apply through May 31. EDC fills rooms in mid-May.

Summer Jun–Aug

Highs 99 to 105°F, lows near 80°F

Too hot to walk far at midday, and the Neon Museum moves to 8 p.m. to midnight from June to August. Rates dip: the citywide average in August 2026 was $150 a night, against $184 for the year to that point.

Fall Sep–Nov

Highs 95°F in September to 67°F in November

October and November are mild and busy. SEMA in early November and the Formula 1 race (November 19 to 21 in 2026) push rates up, and the race runs on the Strip itself, so expect road closures that week.

Winter Dec–Feb

Highs 57 to 63°F, lows near 40°F

Sunny and cool, and nights can drop below freezing. The National Finals Rodeo in early December and CES in the first week of January fill the city, so check those dates first.

Getting around

From the airport

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) is just southeast of the Strip, and there's no train. Taxis charge set zone fares from the airport: $21 to the South Strip, $25 to the Center Strip around Paris and Bellagio, and $29 to Caesars Palace and everything north, plus a $2.40 airport fee, 3 percent tax and $3 if you pay by card. Uber and Lyft pick up on Level 2 of the Terminal 1 garage and the Valet Level of the Terminal 3 garage, and RTC buses (Route 108 and the Red Line) stop at Terminal 1, Level Zero.

Trains and buses

The Deuce, RTC's double-decker bus, runs 24 hours along the Strip to Fremont Street downtown; a 2-hour pass costs $6, 24 hours $8 and 3 days $20, and you can tap a contactless card or phone or buy passes at the machines at stops. The Las Vegas Monorail runs behind the east-side resorts from MGM Grand to SAHARA, at $6 a ride ($5.50 online) or $15 for 24 hours ($13.45 online). Free trams link Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur, and Park MGM, Aria and Bellagio.

Driving

Skip the car for the Strip and downtown, and rent one for a day at Red Rock Canyon. MGM and Caesars resorts charge hotel guests about $20 a day to self-park and around $40 for valet, while Wynn, Treasure Island, SAHARA and most downtown hotels include self-parking for guests.

Worth your time

What to eat

  • Peppermill Restaurant and Fireside Lounge

A neon-lit diner and lounge on the Strip between Wynn and Resorts World since 1972, known for oversized plates and open 24 hours Thursday to Sunday.

  • Lotus of Siam

Northern Thai cooking from Saipin Chutima, who opened on East Sahara Avenue in 1999 and shared the 2011 James Beard Award for Best Chef Southwest; there's a second location at 620 E. Flamingo Rd.

  • Golden Steer Steakhouse

A steakhouse at 308 W. Sahara Ave., just west of the north end of the Strip, open since 1958.

  • Bacchanal Buffet

The Caesars Palace buffet covers more than 25,000 square feet with nine live cooking stations, and an early dinner from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday costs $69.99 with a reservation.

  • Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road

Strip malls full of Chinese and other Asian restaurants run west from Chinatown Plaza, which opened in 1995 at Wynn Road, toward Jones Boulevard, a short drive from the Strip.

Before you go

Tip casino cocktail servers $1 or $2 per drink, even though drinks are free while you gamble, and leave housekeeping $2 to $3 a night with a note so they know it's for them. Daily housekeeping is no longer standard at many hotels. Tip the valet when your car comes back. Smoking is still allowed on most casino floors; Park MGM is the only smoke-free resort on the Strip. At the busiest intersections you cross Las Vegas Boulevard on footbridges, which adds time to every walk.

How Las Vegas got this way

The San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad reached the valley's springs in 1905, and on May 15 that year 110 acres of lots were auctioned in what became downtown. Las Vegas incorporated in 1911. In 1931 Nevada legalized casino gambling, and work began on Hoover Dam, which carried the town through the Depression. Thomas Hull opened El Rancho Vegas in 1941 outside the city limits, the first resort on what became the Strip, and Bugsy Siegel's Flamingo followed in 1946. Bellagio (1998) and the Venetian (1999) pushed the Strip toward luxury, and Resorts World, Sphere and Fontainebleau opened between 2021 and 2023.
