Nashville

Sleep in Downtown and SoBro.

Book Downtown, ideally on the SoBro side south of Broadway. The Ryman, the Country Music Hall of Fame and the honky-tonks are all within a 10 minute walk, you won't need a car, and a hotel a few blocks off Broadway keeps you clear of the bar noise that runs until 3 a.m.

Where to stay in Nashville

Most visitors stay within walking distance of Lower Broadway, the stretch of honky-tonks running up from the Cumberland River. The Ryman, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Bridgestone Arena are a few blocks apart, and the Gulch, Germantown and East Nashville are a short drive or rideshare away.

  1. The blocks around Broadway hold the Ryman on Rep. John Lewis Way North, Bridgestone Arena, and, south of Broadway in SoBro, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Music City Center and the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Hotels include the Hilton Nashville Downtown, the Renaissance and a Holiday Inn Express on Broadway, and the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge crosses the river to Nissan Stadium.

The catch: Robert's Western World and its neighbors stay open until 3 a.m., weekend crowds on Broadway are heavy, and hotel parking runs about $52 to $75 a night.

  2. Newer towers along 11th and 12th avenues south, just southwest of downtown, with hotels such as the Thompson, Canopy by Hilton, Caption by Hyatt and a Fairfield Inn and Suites. The Station Inn, a 165-seat bluegrass room at 402 12th Ave S, has stayed put while the blocks around it were rebuilt.

The catch: Some of the highest rates in the city, especially Thursday through Saturday, and few major sights inside the neighborhood itself.

    Rooms in The Gulch tonight
  3. West End Avenue and Broadway run past Vanderbilt University, Centennial Park and the Parthenon, with Music Row's studios and label offices on 16th and 17th avenues just east. Hotels include the Hutton and the Aloft on West End and the Kimpton Aertson on Broadway, and the 3 West End bus runs every 10 to 15 minutes most of the day.

The catch: Lower Broadway is a 30 to 40 minute walk, so most nights out downtown mean a bus or rideshare.

Rooms in Midtown and West End tonight
  4. Brick rowhouses and converted warehouses north of the State Capitol, next to Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, the Nashville Farmers' Market and First Horizon Park, where the Nashville Sounds play. Monell's serves family-style meals at 1235 6th Ave N, and the Germantown Inn is on the same block.

The catch: Hotel choice is thin, mostly a few small inns and short-term rentals, so book early.

    Rooms in Germantown tonight
  5. Across the Cumberland River, with restaurants and bars around Five Points and the Shelby Bottoms Greenway along the river. The hotels are small and independent: The Russell, a 23-room former church at 819 Russell St, Urban Cowboy on Woodland Street, Waymore's Guest House on Main Street and The Dive Motel on Dickerson Pike.

The catch: Few hotel rooms, so most stays are short-term rentals, and nearly every trip downtown means driving or a rideshare.

When to go

Come in late April, May, late September or October, when highs run between 70 and 85°F. Book weeknights if you can, since Saturday is the most expensive night and Monday the cheapest. January averages about $188 a night and June about $299. Check CMA Fest and stadium concert dates before booking any summer weekend.

Spring Mar–May

Tin Pan South fills songwriter rooms in late March, and the Rock 'n' Roll marathon takes over a late April weekend. May is the wettest month, with about 5 inches of rain.

Summer Jun–Aug

Highs 88 to 91°F, lows near 70°F

Hot and humid, and the priciest stretch. CMA Fest filled 89 percent of downtown rooms in June 2026, and July 4th drew a record 400,000 people.

Fall Sep–Nov

Highs 84°F in September to 61°F in November

AmericanaFest takes over in mid-September, and Titans home games and stadium concerts keep weekends busy. October is the driest month.

Getting around

From the airport

Taxis from Nashville International Airport (BNA) charge a flat $30 to downtown and $35 to West End, plus $2 per extra passenger. WeGo's Route 18 bus costs $2 and leaves from the Ground Transportation Center on Level 1 of the Terminal 2 Garage, reaching WeGo Central downtown in about 20 minutes on express trips and 35 to 45 minutes on local ones.

Trains and buses

WeGo Public Transit runs the city buses. A $2 fare buys two hours of rides if you pay with the QuickTicket app or card or tap a contactless bank card or phone (American Express isn't accepted), and QuickTicket caps you at the $4 day pass. Cash must be exact, $2 per boarding, with no transfers.

Driving

Skip the car if you're staying downtown, but you'll want one or a rideshare for the Opry, the Bluebird Cafe and the Loveless Cafe. Downtown hotels charge about $52 to $75 a night for parking, much of it valet only.

Worth your time

What to eat

  • Hot chicken

Prince's Hot Chicken Shack traces its recipe to Thornton Prince more than a century ago; the main shop is at 5814 Nolensville Pike, with a counter in Assembly Food Hall downtown.

  • Arnold's Country Kitchen

    A cafeteria-line meat-and-three at 605 8th Ave S, open weekdays 10:30 to 2:45 and Saturdays 11 to 3.

  • Monell's

A boarding-house restaurant at 1235 6th Ave N in Germantown where strangers share big tables and pass bowls, for one set price that includes drink and dessert.

  • Loveless Cafe

Biscuits, country ham and preserves on Highway 100 since 1951, near the northern end of the Natchez Trace Parkway.

  • Goo Goo Cluster

Marshmallow nougat, caramel and peanuts in milk chocolate, made in Nashville since 1912 and sold at the company's shop on 3rd Avenue just south of Broadway.

Before you go

Tip 18 to 20 percent at sit-down restaurants and $1 or $2 a drink at bars. Fifth Avenue downtown is now Rep. John Lewis Way, so older listings still give Fifth Avenue addresses for the Ryman and the Hall of Fame. Robert's Western World and some other bars go 21 and up in the evening, so carry ID. The Bluebird checks that the name on the reservation matches your ID and won't honor resold tickets. Arnold's serves lunch only and is closed Sunday, so plan meat-and-three for midday.

How Nashville got this way

James Robertson's party reached the Cumberland on Christmas Day 1779 and built Fort Nashborough, named for Revolutionary War general Francis Nash, and John Donelson's party of about 60 families arrived in April 1780. The town became Nashville in 1784 and won the permanent state capital in 1843 by one vote. In February 1862 it was the first state capital to fall to Union troops. The Ryman opened as a gospel tabernacle in 1892, WSM radio started its Barn Dance in 1925 and renamed it the Grand Ole Opry in 1927, and a 1950 on-air ad-lib gave the city its Music City nickname. Nashville and Davidson County merged governments in 1963.
