Austin

Sleep in Downtown.

Stay Downtown, near Congress Avenue: the Capitol, the Lady Bird Lake trail and the bats under the Congress Avenue Bridge are all on foot, and South Congress is one bridge away. For SXSW in March or the ACL Fest and Grand Prix weekends in October, book months ahead, or look at East Austin and the Domain, which usually cost less.

Where to stay in Austin

Downtown Austin runs from the Texas State Capitol south along Congress Avenue to Lady Bird Lake, a dammed stretch of the Colorado River with a 10-mile hike-and-bike trail around it. South Congress, Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool are just across the water, and East Austin starts on the other side of I-35.

  1. The widest choice of hotels in the city, from The Driskill to the Canopy by Hilton at 604 West 6th and Hotel Indigo on Red River. The Capitol sits at the top of Congress Avenue, the Paramount Theatre and the 6th Street clubs are a short walk away, and the Butler Trail along Lady Bird Lake is a few blocks south. MetroRapid 801 and 803 both stop at Republic Square and the Capitol.

The catch: Hotel valet runs about $55 to $69 a night plus tax, and the bar blocks of East 6th Street are loud late on weekends.

  2. The stretch of South Congress Avenue south of the river is lined with vintage shops, restaurants and food trucks, and the hotels are mostly small boutiques: Hotel San Jose, Hotel Magdalena on Music Lane, the Austin Motel and Hotel Saint Cecilia. Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool are a short drive west, and the bats under the Congress Avenue Bridge are at the north end.

The catch: Rooms are mostly boutique and priced like it, with little in the true mid-range, and the avenue fills with shoppers on weekend afternoons.

  3. A short street of old bungalows turned into bars with porches and yards, in the southeast corner of downtown between Lady Bird Lake and I-35. Hotels nearby include Hotel Van Zandt at 605 Davis Street, with a rooftop pool and live music at Geraldine's, and the Butler Trail along the lake is steps away.

The catch: Weekend nights are loud and crowded, and towers going up around the bungalows mean ongoing construction.

    Rooms in Rainey Street tonight
  4. East 6th Street and East Cesar Chavez hold many of the city's best-known bars and restaurants, with Franklin Barbecue on East 11th and Joe's Bakery on East 7th. Hotels are smaller and fewer, including East Austin Hotel, ARRIVE East Austin and Sentral East Austin at 1630 East 6th.

The catch: Only a handful of hotels, so they sell out fast on festival weekends, and walking downtown means crossing under I-35.

    Rooms in East Austin tonight
  5. An outdoor shopping and office district in north Austin off MoPac (Loop 1) and Burnet Road, with Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, the Apple Store and the local shops of Rock Rose. Hotels include the Archer Hotel and Aloft Austin at the Domain, Q2 Stadium is across the road, and MetroRapid 803 starts here.

The catch: Far from the lake and the music clubs, and the drive downtown on MoPac or I-35 gets slow at rush hour.

Prices are typical mid-range hotel rates per night before tax, rounded to $10. Times are to Congress Avenue and 6th Street. Booking links open tonight's real prices.

When to go

Come in November or early December, when highs run in the 60s and low 70s and October's festival and race crowds are gone. If you can handle heat, July is the cheapest month (about $148 a night on average on Kayak, against $254 in March), and Barton Springs makes the afternoons bearable. Skip mid-March and October weekends unless you are coming for the events.

Spring Mar–May

Highs 73-87°F, lows 52-67°F

March is the most expensive month for hotels because SXSW and Rodeo Austin overlap. The bats return to the Congress Avenue Bridge from mid-March, and May is already warm and humid.

Summer Jun–Aug

Highs 96-98°F in July and August, lows near 75°F

Hot, and July is the cheapest month for rooms. Barton Springs stays at 68 to 70°F, and late July and August are the best time to see the bats.

Fall Sep–Nov

Highs 91°F in September, 82°F in October, 72°F in November

September is still hot. October is the busiest month, with two ACL Fest weekends, the Formula 1 Grand Prix and Longhorns home games, and November is cooler and cheaper.

Winter Dec–Feb

Highs 62-67°F, lows 42-46°F

Mild, with occasional cold snaps. Rates are lower outside of the Trail of Lights in December and Austin Marathon weekend in February.

Getting around

From the airport

Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) is about 8 miles southeast of downtown. CapMetro Route 20 leaves from the lower level just outside baggage claim every 15 to 30 minutes and reaches downtown in about 35 minutes for $1.25. Uber and Lyft pick up under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility behind the Red Garage and usually cost $20 to $30 to downtown before surge pricing, which climbs during SXSW and race weekends.

Trains and buses

CapMetro runs local buses and MetroRapid lines, including the 801 (North Lamar and South Congress) and 803 (Burnet and South Lamar), which cross downtown and UT every 10 to 20 minutes. A local ride is $1.25 and is capped at $2.50 a day if you tap a contactless card or phone on the bus validator (no American Express) or pay with the Umo app; paper day passes are no longer sold on buses. The CapMetro Rail Red Line costs $3.50 and does not take tap to pay, so use Umo, and expect higher fares from January 10, 2027.

Driving

You can skip a car if you stay Downtown, on South Congress or on Rainey Street, but one helps for the Wildflower Center, Mount Bonnell and Circuit of The Americas. Downtown hotels charge about $55 to $69 a night for overnight parking, plus tax.

Worth your time

What to eat

  • Franklin Barbecue

Brisket at 900 East 11th Street, open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. until it sells out (often by 2 or 3 p.m.); the line starts long before opening, or order ahead online.

  • Breakfast tacos

Joe's Bakery at 2305 East 7th has made them on house-made flour tortillas since 1962; order the migas taco and a piece of pink cake.

  • Veracruz All Natural

A family taco business run by sisters Reyna and Maritza Vazquez since 2008, now with locations on Rainey Street, Webberville Road in East Austin and elsewhere.

  • Bob Armstrong dip

Queso layered with taco meat and guacamole, named for a former Texas land commissioner, at Matt's El Rancho, the family Tex-Mex restaurant at 2613 South Lamar that opened in 1952.

  • Kerbey Lane Cafe

A local chain that started in a small house on Kerbey Lane in 1980, known for buttermilk pancakes and queso served all day.

Before you go

Tip 18 to 20 percent at sit-down restaurants and $1 or $2 a drink at bars. Order screens at counters and food trucks will suggest a tip, which is up to you. Swimming in Lady Bird Lake is illegal, so swim at Barton Springs or Deep Eddy Pool instead. Many restaurants and attractions close one day a week (Franklin on Mondays, the Ransom Center on Mondays, Barton Springs midday Thursdays), so check before you go. Locals call South Congress "SoCo."

How Austin got this way

Edward Burleson surveyed a small settlement called Waterloo on the Colorado River in 1838, and a year later President Mirabeau B. Lamar's commission picked it as the capital of the Republic of Texas and renamed it for Stephen F. Austin. Edwin Waller laid out the downtown grid. Sam Houston tried to move the government records out in 1842, and residents stopped him in what became known as the Archive War. The University of Texas held its first classes in 1883, and the granite Capitol was dedicated in 1888. IBM, Texas Instruments and Motorola opened plants between 1967 and 1974, and the city reached 965,827 people by 2022.
